Victorian Day…
Posted in Uncategorized on November 24, 2008 by year5Today, Y5 went back in time to Monday 24th November 1898, to experience what it would have been like to go to school in Victorian Times.
The children (and staff!) all looked the part and went in to role as soon as the day began. I came in to the playground and rang the bell. The scholars had to line up in two rows (boys and girls separately), in height order.
After registration, Mrs Dickson and I inspected the scholars’ hands and shoes for cleanliness.
The scholars took part in a variety of lessons throughout the day including the three Rs, Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic. They had to practise their best copperplate handwriting, remembering to slant at an angle of 60 degrees and try their best not to blot their copy books.
At play time, the scholars were allowed to play with hoops and skipping ropes but they also had to learn a long poem off by heart!
Some scholars were punished for not knowing their times tables! They had to either wear the Dunce armband and Dunce hat, wear the Idiot sign or even get caned!!! Luckily, no-one had to practise lying on a hard floor over lunch time, to keep their backs straight!
In the afternoon, they did drill in the hall, which is the Victorian form of PE.
They finished the day with an object lesson, the subject being ‘the potato’. Everyone learnt some interesting facts!!!
Even though it was tiring (especially for me!), from their reflections, I think most people got a lot out of today.
Well done boys and girls - you were all superb! Thanks also to mums and dads for supporting with the costumes. Everyone really looked the part which made the day even more effective.
Thank you boys and girls. I look forward to being Mrs Burns again tomorrow, rather than Ma’am but I must say one thing…I hope the presentation of your work is as good as it was today!
Ps I will be adding some photos tomorrow so keep checking the blog!

History is coming to life in Y5…
Posted in Uncategorized on November 19, 2008 by year5Monday 24th November.
As you will already know, throughout this term, Year 5 have been studying the Victorians. To complement our history curriculum and to bring the subject to life I would like to hold a Victorian School Day on Monday 24th November. On this occasion, can you please come to school dressed in clothing typical of the Victorian period. The following may be useful ideas:

Boys |
Girls |

Throughout the day we will be conducting lessons in true Victorian style and it is important that you try your best to go into role because it is an important part of your learning. If anybody has any old Victorian style games you could bring them in on the day. Lunch and break times will take place as normal.
I’m sure it will be a great day for all!

History…
Posted in Uncategorized on November 18, 2008 by year5On Thursday, in history, we are going to be finding out more about Child Labour in Victorian Times.
First of all, we are going to watch some film clips on a DVD.
Then, in pairs, you will use the laptops and some written information to research the topic.
You will be asked to present your findings in your chosen form:
* mind map (with at least four main branches)
* written account (with at least four paragraphs with appropriate subheadings)
This is a fab website for starters but you can also explore other sites that you find.
Following this, you will get the chance to carry out some role play!
Good luck and have fun!

Wow sentences…
Posted in Uncategorized on November 15, 2008 by year5On Friday, for our Big Write, we retold the story of ‘Our Benny’ after our visit to the theatre. (Thanks Mrs Brankin, for organising it by the way!)
I was really impressed by the standard of work produced by the children overall, but one or two sentences were really special and had the WOW factor!
Check these out…
I was astounded and for a day or two sad thoughts were drained from my mind. (Grace)
My body was warm but my heart was frozen inside. (Amy)
About a year after I worked there it came to a shuddering halt, the happiness drained from me for Eva’s dad accused me of something I did not do. (James)
Well done you three. A chance card is waiting for each of you!
World Champion!!!
Posted in Uncategorized on November 14, 2008 by year5No, you are not seeing things…
We have a World Champion in our class.
Josh competed against a Brazilian yesterday in the WKA Points Final and he won!
Elle brought in a picture today which has been emailed from Florida showing him receiving his Gold Medal!
Wow!!!
Well done Josh!!!
