Victorian Day
Today, Y5 went back in time to Monday 19th November 1898, to experience what it would have been like to go to school in Victorian Times.
The children (and staff!) all looked the part and went in to role as soon as the day began. Miss Blackham came in to the playground and rang the bell. The scholars had to line up in two rows (boys and girls separately), in height order.
After registration, the scholars went into assembly. Back in class, the teachers inspected the scholars’ hands and shoes for cleanliness.
The scholars took part in a variety of lessons throughout the day including the three Rs, Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic. The scholars had to practise their best copperplate handwriting, remembering to slant at an angle of 60 degrees and try their best not to blot their copy books.
At play time, the scholars were allowed to play with hoops and skipping ropes but they also had to learn a long poem off by heart!
Some scholars were punished for not knowing their times tables! They had to either wear the Dunce armband and Dunce hat, wear the Idiot sign or even get caned!!! Some scholars had to practise lying on a hard floor over lunch time, to keep their backs straight!
In the afternoon, they did drill in the hall, which is the Victorian form of PE.
They finished the day with an object lesson, the subject being ‘the potato’. Everyone learnt some interesting facts!
Even though it was tiring (especially for me!), from their reflections, I think most people got a lot out of today. Listen to our podcasts to find out what the scholars really thought!
Well done boys and girls - you were all superb!

Victorian day was quite good, Miss Blackham is really good at being strict! One of the lessons was objects and we had to learn about a potato, which was quite boring. At break we had to learn a poem. I am really glad that Miss Blackham is back to normal again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
