Victorians…

Posted in Uncategorized on October 31, 2007 by year5

Just a reminder that this half term we will be having a Victorian Day, where you will be expected to come to school in Victorian costume and we will role play a typical school day.

I will be sending out a letter with more information closer to the time but you can start thinking about finding a costume.

Y5’s Big Writing Goal Scorers of the Week

Posted in Uncategorized on October 26, 2007 by year5

This week’s Big Write was a recount text. The boys and girls had to imagine they were a poor, homeless child in Victorian times. However, part of the way through their recount they were to meet Dr. Barnado and explain how he changed children’s lives for the better.

This week’s goalscorers are…

GOAL!!!!!

The golden, crisp sun grew as we got a bath in a nearby swamp which was covered in gunge. By Andrew

I heard a loud shout behind me, but I didn’t stop. I tightened my grip around the coins I’d just stolen, my heart pounding. I then chose the wrong moment to look back and stumbled over a hidden tree root. I closed my eyes, waiting for the cold, unfriendly feeling of handcuffs…   By Bronte

I felt as cold as a frozen mammoth when I woke up, for it was only about half five. By Mark

It all started when I woke up on a damp, hard and uncomfortable deserted park bench  where I used to sleep. By Maisie

The golden sun finally shone upon me and my friend as I tenderly cry with happiness. By Stephen

Due to the condition of the weather I still had to go out and beg - it’s lousy! We never get anything anyway so it’s useless! By Rachel

Well done to all of you. We had 6 goals this week, which was only three more than Wolves scored against Cardiff! Third in the Championship at the moment by the way - could be playing against the Mighty Reds next season! Come on the Wanderers!

Y5 show off their musical talents!

Posted in Uncategorized on October 15, 2007 by year5

Over the past half term, Y5 have been experimenting with putting Victorian Street Cries to music.

The boys and girls worked in small groups to compose words and rhythms for their street cries. I surprised myself with my technical ability and actually tried to record them so I will hopefully be able to put them on the blog as a podcast (when Mr Rafferty kindly shows me how!)

For now, you’ll have to make do with some pictures…

Well done to all of the brave speakers (pictured below) who read so well in church on Thursday.

Also, thanks to Owen (and Karl and Saul) who produced a great flag of the USA in Art.

Y5 has an author in its midst!

Posted in Uncategorized on October 11, 2007 by year5

After our visit from George Layton (the acclaimed author/actor) last week, Y5 were asked to write their own version of the short story that followed ’The Back Bedroom’ from his book ‘The Trick’.

This was Bronte’s  version of ‘The White Rose’…

The White Rose

I always felt intrigued by the man in the window and the single white rose that stood in the narrow vase on the windowsill next to where he sat. The rose always looked vibrant and fresh, I was sure it must be artificial. I felt drawn to this man, I could not understand why, but I also felt a bit afraid and wary of him.

One day he was waiting at the door instead of his usual spot in the window, he invited me in. Although my mum knew him I didn’t feel happy going into his house, I shouted ‘no thanks’ and ran.

That night as I lay in bed I couldn’t stop thinking about the incident and I decided to get up. I dressed quickly and sneaked out of the house, making sure I took a set of keys.

The man’s house was in darkness, I went to the side gate, to my surprise it was unlocked so I cautiously opened it and went through. The moment I entered the garden I was dazzled by the brightness. Even though it was nighttime the garden was lit up and gleaming with a sea of white roses. They stood straight, tall and beautiful yet too prickly to touch. I was astounded and lost for words. Then I saw something that made my heart leap. In the centre of the luxurious rose garden was the most amazing model railway village I had ever seen. There were trains speeding along the tracks, signals changing red to green and buildings dotted here and there.

I then realised why I was drawn to this man, because of our love for model trains and railways.
